What makes a good MCT Oil?

  • Consistency almost like water
  • Odourless, colourless and tasteless (very faint taste of Coconut)
  • Lower the Lauric Acid (C-12) levels, the better it is

Coconut Oil vs MCT Oil

  • Constituents of Coconut Oil – Caprylic Acid (C-8, 8%), Capric Acid (C-10, 7%), Lauric Acid (C-12, 49%), Mytristic Acid (C-14, 8%), Palmitic Acid (C-16, 8%), Stearic Acid (C-18, 2%), Oleic Acid (C-18, 6%) and Linoleic Acid (C-18, 2%)
  • From the above it’s clear that C6, 8 & 10 just constitute 15% of total volume. The remaining 85% Coconut oil is  long chain fatty acids which take a long time to digest and are likely to be stored as fat in the body (rather than converting into energy immediately)
  • From purely an healthy energy boost standpoint – Coconut MCT Oil is far ahead of Coconut Oil
  • For other benefits like higher HDL levels, immunity boost, anti-microbial properties etc, one should use Cold Pressed Virgin Coconut Oil (Do check our VCO here)

Why use MCT Oil over MCT Powder?

  • Oils are converted into powder by a process called ‘Spray-Drying’
  • In this process, oil is blown into small droplets & encapsulated in ‘base powder’
  • Addition of base powder brings down the efficacy.
  • 100gms of MCT powder contains just about 50-80gms of MCT Oil. Balance is either carbohydrates or fibre
  • Most commonly used base powder today is ‘Maltodextrin’, it’s unhealthy because it’s a complex sugar and high in carbs

MCT Oil vs Pure C8 Oil

  • Experts recommend using MCT Oil over C8 Oil as all the scientific research studies have been conducted by administering broad spectrum MCT Oil (which contains both C8 and C10)
  • Benefits like improved gut health & improved cognitive function were seen after using broad spectrum MCT Oil
  • Pure C8 oil may cause bowel irritation. Broad spectrum MCT Oil is much more balanced
